AMD Collaborates with Arka Media Works and Film Director SS Rajamouli to Create Stunning VR Experiences Based On Upcoming Baahubali Sequel

Today at the Mumbai Film Festival organized by the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image (MAMI)AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) showcased new technology that can bring 360 video and Virtual Reality to millions through a bleeding edge Virtual Reality capture instrument with up to 32 cameras and the AMD’s renowned GPU-accelerated video stitching software. Used in conjunction with Radeon™ Pro Graphics, the new technology is being used initially to develop content to promote the upcoming Baahubali: The Conclusion, a movie directed by SS Rajamouli scheduled to premiere on April 28, 2017.

Under the creative direction of SS Rajamouli, Arka Media Works and AMD’s Radeon Technologies Group (RTG) are using the new technology to collaborate on two pieces of compelling VR content: a 360-degree video titled “On the Sets of Baahubali” and a fully immersive VR experience, “The Sword of Baahubali.” On the Sets of Baahubali is available now, and was shown to attendees of MAMI on October 22nd and 23rd along with early takes of The Sword of Baahubali. “We are beyond thrilled to have Baahubali: The Conclusion and AMD’s Radeon Technologies Group showcase the world’s most advanced VR experience for the first time here at MAMI,” said Anupama Chopra, director of the JIo MAMI 18th Mumbai Film Festival with Star.

“As humans we are at awe when we experience things of large scale – both natural and man-made,” said Rajamouli, director for both Baahubali films. “We are at awe when we see the Grand Canyon, we are also at awe when we stand next to 2,722 feet tall man-made Bhurj Khalifa. I have been fascinated by the possibilities with scale since the first time I experienced VR. Through collaboration with AMD’s Radeon Technologies Group we have been fortunate to get access to cutting edge VR technologies that are helping us to push the boundaries like never before.”

To create these experiences, AMD has built the radical new VR capture camera – the bb360cc – and leading-edge 360-degree video stitching software. The bb360cc provides real-time VR preview and up to 32 cameras. Using AMD-created Project Loom software, videographers can rapidly stitch 360-degree video, often in real-time or nearly so, eclipsing the time needed using alternative techniques. The open source Project Loom software is expected to be widely available to content creators by the end of the year.

“AMD is committed to bringing VR to millions across the globe and that includes enabling filmmakers to provide cinematic quality to a VR experience,” said Raja Koduri, senior vice president and chief architect, Radeon Technologies Group, AMD. “On the Sets of Baahubali is being shot with the new bb360cc camera and the teaser clips being shown a MAMI are easily the most stunning 360 video yet experienced. The Sword of Baahubali is a very ambitious real-time computer graphics VR experience that is designed to push the limits of next generation GPU hardware.”

“We’re excited to be working with AMD’s Radeon Technologies Group to create state-of-the-art VR experiences,” said Shobu Yarlagadda, co-founder and CEO of Arka Media Works. “We are targeting the release of The Sword of Baahubali in April, 2017 around the release of the film. We already have a few hundred theaters planning to install the VR equipment to support the launch of this extraordinary and compelling VR experience.”

AMD Details Radeon™ Pro Pipeline for Cinematic VR Content, New Collaborations to Bring Premium VR Experiences Out of Home

AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) outlined powerful new solutions to two of the largest issues facing professional VR content creators today: how to create compelling VR content that approaches cinematic fidelity, and how to maximize that content’s viewership. In the opening keynote at VR on the Lot, a two-day summit bringing together the top players in media, entertainment and technology, AMD detailed innovative Radeon™ Pro technologies designed to fuel the creation of real-time photorealistic VR content, and announced collaborations to facilitate the distribution of premium VR content to out-of-home experiences around the world.
“In creating Radeon Pro, we sought to address the industry’s biggest problems, and for many creators, there’s none bigger than cinematic VR content,” said Roy Taylor, corporate VP and head of alliances, content and VR, Radeon Technologies Group, AMD“Bringing your creative vision to life can be a demanding and laborious process and working in VR, those demands are exponentially multiplied. Through extraordinary Radeon Pro hardware and software, we’re helping alleviate the technical burdens of creativity, empowering artists to focus on telling their story, and through our efforts in location-based entertainment, giving them new opportunities to share their work with the world.”
Unleashing creativity in VR through Radeon Pro technology
Unveiled at SIGGRAPH 2016, Radeon Pro technology represents a fundamentally different approach to content creation, informed by a deep focus on open source software, and solutions that are built for modern content creation processes. At VR on the Lot, AMD addressed the challenge of achieving photorealism in real-time: how to deliver compelling synthetically-rendered and filmed content in a smooth and enjoyable VR experience.
At the heart of the solution is the new Radeon Pro WX 7100 GPU, capable of handling demanding media and entertainment workflows and professional VR content creation needs at a planned MSRP under $1,000 USD.1 The Radeon™ Pro WX 7100 uses the award-winning Polaris architecture to deliver extraordinary performance while boasting workstation-grade components and build quality, with planned availability later this year.
Powerful software tools complement the Radeon™ Pro WX 7100, including Radeon ProRender, an open-source physically-based rendering engine available on GPUOpen.com, designed to deliver extraordinary photorealistic rendered content. By harnessing powerful hardware in Radeon Pro graphics and Radeon ProRender software in their systems, content creators can render final-frame quality outputs that appear true-to-life.
For filmed content, AMD’s Project Loom is designed to enable real-time 360-degree video stitching that combines the output of up to 24 cameras to enable 4K resolution at 30 frames per second in VR. Project Loom is targeted for availability later this year as open source on GPUOpen.com.
To help in handling incredibly large datasets such as 360-degree video footage in 4K, AMD introduced the Radeon™ Pro Solid State Graphics (SSG) card. Initially available as a developer kit, Radeon Pro SSG gives content creators a full terabyte of memory directly attached to the GPU to drive astounding performance gains. For instance, the Radeon Pro SSG handles 8K raw video with ease, enabling real-time video scrubbing at 90+ frames per second, up from 17 frames per second using conventional graphics memory.2
Expanding the premium VR ecosystem out of home
AMD today also announced significant steps to expand the availability of premium VR experiences through new collaborations with Awesome RocketshipHowie’s Game Shack® and VRrOOm. The agreements will leverage AMD’s world-class hardware and software to drive new and exciting VR installations in malls, cinemas, i-cafés and other retail locations, providing new revenue opportunities for venues, expanded distribution opportunities for content creators, and incredible new entertainment experiences to consumers.
AMD is working with Awesome Rocketship, a provider of complete out-of-home solutions for monetizing VR content across a variety of locations including theater lobbies, trade shows, shopping malls, and museums. At VR on the Lot, AMD and Awesome Rocketship are showcasing the company’s sleek, premium-designed Venue VR Gateway pod, featuring stunning content in Phoenix One, a narrative science fiction adventure in VR.
Howie’s Game Shack®, operator of one of the largest game centers in North America, has announced they will open three VR-oriented i-cafés in Southern California, the first of their kind in North America. These cafés will feature several dozen VR PCs paired with HTC Vive headsets, powered exclusively by Radeon™ graphics.
AMD also announced a collaboration today with VRrOOm to help advance cinematic storytelling through VR in cinemas across China. VRrOOm has developed an end-to-end model for VR entertainment including the VRrOOm Sanctum theater experience, a digital news and content distribution platform extension (www.VRrOOm.buzz) and VR content production. VRrOOm plans to use AMD hardware in VRrOOm Sanctum theatres in cinemas located in six Chinese cities including Beijing and Shanghai, and two French cities including Paris starting this fall through VRrOOm's exclusive partnership with China Film Group's affiliated company CFEC and French cinema chain CineMovida. VRrOOm anticipates dozens of VRrOOm Sanctum installations across China and Europe by the end of 2017 and is currently discussing further deployment throughout the United States as well.
Demonstrating AMD’s commitment to Hollywood, AMD recently opened an office on Sunset Boulevard to more easily support productions and partnerships around media and entertainment. VR on the Lot runs through tomorrow at Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles.

Acer’s Ultra-Thin-And-Light Notebooks Awarded Japanese Good Design Awards

Acer announces that its latest ultra-thin-and-light notebooks have been honored at the 2016 edition of Japan’s Good Design Award, including both the Acer Swift 7, which is the world’s first[1] notebook to measure less than 1 cm thin, and the convertible Acer Spin 7, weighing just 1.2 kg. The abTouchPhone, a touchscreen multimedia IP desk phone, was also awarded for its full range of practical communication features, and also for its simple yet elegantly designed appearance.
Acer’s winning products stood out from over 4,000 entries, and were selected over a rigorous five-month screening process involving 76 international jury members. Screenings were held not only in Japan but also in South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

Jury’s Evaluation of the Acer Swift 7
“The thinness and functionality of a laptop PC conflict with its operability, but the Acer Swift 7 strikes an appropriate balance between the two elements. The streamlined shape of the PC, which is less than 1 cm thick, makes it look visually thinner than it actually is, and the product generally has a robust yet elaborate image due to its use of cut and molded aluminum alloy as a material. Furthermore, despite its thickness, it provides a favorable touch button, and the use of a large touch panel achieves both a beautiful design and ease of use.”

Jury’s Evaluation of the Acer Spin 7
“Consumers have growing expectations for convertible laptop PCs as smartphones become more common and these convertible laptop PCs are expected to be used on occasions different from those for ordinary laptop PCs, and unlike the latter, the former also needs to meet various needs in terms of structure. The Acer Spin 7 is light and slim, and under these restricted conditions, it uses a rotary touch panel, meeting user needs in various situations through its 14-inch monitor and fan-less design. The case made from an aluminum alloy adds a sense of high quality to the product while ensuring its sturdiness. The Spin 7 boasts of outstanding performance as a hybrid convertible PC.”

Jury’s Evaluation of the abTouchPhone
“As smartphones offer increasingly diverse functions, users are also looking for installed touchphones. Using highly-functional and high-quality communications, this product meets the above-mentioned needs of users while they are busy at work or leading their busy lives. Another characteristic is its simple yet elegantly designed external appearance.”
About the Good Design Award
The Good Design Award is hosted by the Japan Institute for Design Promotion, a public interest incorporated foundation. It’s precursor, the Good Design Selection System (or G Mark System), was founded in 1957 by Japan’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry (the current Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), and has engaged in this field for about 60 years. Submissions come from a wide range of industries, and roughly 1,200 designs are recognized every year.

Acer Academy names new and loyal members at awards night

Local IT giant Acer Philippines, Inc. recently honored members of its Acer Academy program during the awards night held at the Manila Ocean Park.

Acer introduced the new members of its growing Acer Academy program. The event also served as a platform to showcase its continuing efforts in strengthening its partnership with the academe in setting new benchmarks in the education sphere.

Loyalty awards were also given to schools that were part of the program for no less than 3 years. Benefits included rewards based on purchases where points are earned and can be converted into training opportunities, free devices for the school, discounts and freebies. For walk-in purchases at the Acer Concept Store, the faculty will be awarded with outright discounts upon showing of their school ID and upon availing of the Extended Faculty Purchase Program from the loyalty program. This offer is good for one year only.

The new members for Luzon include Metro Manila College, St. Dominic College of Asia, Adventist University of the Philippines, Immaculada Concepcion College, Don Bosco Technical College, Holistic and Development Center, and Faith Academy. The Loyalty awardees are Saint Pedro Poveda College, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, and Holy Angel University.

Acer also showcased its various impressive new products for the education sector, particularly its latest desktops, laptops, tablets, projectors and other modern teaching equipment for today’s 21st Century classrooms during the event, themed “Dive into Discovery: Experience the world of innovation.”

Major event highlights include the inspirational talks from two of Acer’s latest brand ambassadors. Francis Kong, an award-winning business columnist and speaker, talked about the challenges he faced early on in his career and how he aspired for greater goals in order to succeed. Megan Young, Miss World 2013, on the other hand, talked about how her aspirations to succeed pushed her to achieve her goals through hard work and determination.

Prior to the Acer brand ambassadors’ speeches, an exciting “Mermaid Show” was performed by the Manila Ocean Park Mermaid team. Later in the evening, a thrilling treat was provided by Acer Philippines where member-schools toured the Manila Ocean Park and visited some of its most notable attractions like the “Oceanarium,” “Fish Spa” and “Trails to Antarctica.”

Carren Garcia, Channel Sales Manager, Acer Philippines, also provided updates regarding the program, which now has 97 members, a far cry from only 11 member-schools when the program started several years back. “The target was to grow the membership to 100 schools by year-end. Definitely we are on target of surpassing that number,” she pointed out.

The Acer Academy Program started in 2012. The membership now includes colleges and universities nationwide, with the biggest coming from Luzon, followed by Mindanao and then the Visayas. As member-schools of the program, the school and students enjoy several benefits such as Acer’s sponsorship of school events and activities, free training for the school faculty and IT personnel, participation in campus tours, and students of an Acer Academy program member are prioritized under Acer’s internship program where they get first crack at on-the-job or even possible hiring opportunities.

Garcia also announced that they are looking at growing the number of the program’s member-schools. More importantly, however, she said it is all about retaining more member-schools for it to be able to serve the academe. “Our plan next year is to engage even the students of member-schools and not just the faculty. We are also looking at creating an annual programming and design skills competition using Acer devices, technology and other gadgets. The mechanics is already being crafted. Initially, we’re looking at senior high school to college students as participants.”

Other plans, Garcia said, include the launching of the “Acer Cloud Professor,” which will utilize software programming and robotics, plus conducting outreach programs where Acer will seek the help of member-schools in identifying certain indigent communities by helping share technologies and other CSR-related activities.
